The Neighbours Project
As part of Edmonton’s RECOVER urban wellness initiative, three citizens developed a prototype to bridge connections between housed and unhoused neighbours in Old Strathcona. Initially focused on creating paid “odd job” opportunities for unhoused residents, the project evolved into a broader exploration of how work and shared experiences can foster dignity, belonging, and mutual respect in communities.
In collaboration with The Mustard Seed and supported by the City of Edmonton, the McConnell Foundation, and Social Innovation Canada, The Neighbours Project sought to reimagine how all neighbours, regardless of housing status, can contribute meaningfully to their community. The process and learnings were documented through an interactive online platform, emphasizing connection, empathy, and community transformation through small acts of engagement.
